Spicy Marinated Tofu with Avocado Sauce

This was so so. The sauce was different but I didn't feel it was particularly memorable. I do enjoy trying new tofu recipes, but this one didn't do it for me.

White Beans, Spinach & Tomatoes over Linguine

This was sort of bland. I didn't use cheese and instead used some hot sauce, Youki Shisen Toban Jan, I picked up at this Japanese market. The hot sauce helped but I still felt this lacked flavor.

Chickpeas, Garlic & Kale

Fantastic. Super easy to do. I love the taste of the kale when cooked. I can't emphasize how inexpensive and easy this recipe is.

Runs from September 18-September 24, 2011, 46.22 Miiles

See the race report here

September 19,2011

5.34 Miles
57:38 Time
10:48 Pace

I probably should have taken a day off but I miss my running group.  With Irene, Labor Day and not feeling 100% last week it was my first time in a month, though I guess there wasn't a group each week.  Just my luck no one else showed up.  It went crappy, but that's expected.

September 21, 2011

7.38 Miles
1:15:31 Time
10:14 Pace

Felt so good, especially after such a crappy run Monday. One of my better recent runs. I checked out the McMillan calculator and learned this isn't fast enough to be a tempo run, but maybe next time I can run 9:29-9:54. My second best mile was mile 5, which includes the Cove road hill.

September 23, 2011

5.09 Miles
47:02 Time
9:14 Pace

Fastest run in over a month.  Tomorrow I will go slow and do a long run.

September 24, 2011

15.31 Miles
2:50:49 Time
11:09 Pace

Wasn't painful but I crashed at the end, running mile 15 at a 15:10 pace.  In fairness I didn't fuel too well (I filled my water bottle with water mixed with CytoMax, which I got at some race and ate 1 Power Bar Energy Blast package and 1 Cliff Shot energy gel and I stopped twice for a 16oz bottle of Gatorade.)  The good news is I ran 46.22 for the week, the highest weekly mileage in 32 weeks.  CardioTrainer has total climb as .3 miles.

Vegan Chorizo Burrito

I think I should stick to stirfrys. This tasted a bit dry, though in fairness I used no sour cream and only about 1/5 of a jar of salsa. I didn't know I needed salsa as it wasn't listed with the ingredients. I do like the soyrizo I used before so maybe I will find a better recipe for it.

Pesto Pasta (Spicy Vegan Recipe)

A+ This is just delicious! The sauce is fantastic, a little spicy (jalapeno) with a mix (soy milk, orange, basil, pistachios, etc). Very good and easy to make.

Cheesy Creamy Casserole

I like the quote from the recipe, "It always blows my mind that vegans are seen as dietary weirdos, but eating a burger with 55 grams of fat is considered normal." The recipe was so so. Good, but not particularly memorable.

Yonkers Half Marathon

13.1 Miles
2:09:39 Time
9:54 Pace

My official/ranked time was 2:10:05 and the net time was 2:09:39.

My prior road half PR was 2:17:41 (Yonkers 2010, the only road half I had run prior to today.)

I finished strong.  I really finished strong.  I ran a negative split (see comments below) and the last two miles were the best miles.  I feel I just took off, and I was flying by people at the end.  I went in thinking I would just take it easy and not really care how I was running.  I didn't want to run too hard and risk injury or worry about recovery time because of New York.  Then I got warmed up and I was feeling good, better than I had been feeling recently.  I figured let's see what I can do.  I was worried that I would crash toward the middle but other than it went really well.  When I was told I was at mile 12 but I thought it was mile 11, that helped give a big boost.  I don't think it was quite mile 12 though because of how much longer it took to finish.  I felt great when I finished and had no problems eating or anything, unlike how I felt when I ran this last year.

I don't think my body was in top shape because I ran Friday and Saturday, but I gave a great effort today.  I probably could do a little better in better shape but a PR is a a PR.  A big boost of self esteem.  Then my self esteem was reduced when I was talking to this young woman who ran it in 1:57.  She said it was her first half, she did her 1 ten mile run, a lot of treadmill running and barely ran for the last two weeks (I think injury or something.)

-Other notes

CardioTrainer had total elevation 361 yards.

Some pictures (including some of the rolling hills Yonkers is known for) http://www.flickr.com/photos/59540935@N08/sets/72157627576121545/

The weather was good.  Perfect actually.  It was like high 40s at first (8 AM start) and then it went up to like mid 50s.  Not too cold or hot for shorts and a tech shirt.

For breakfast, cereal/smoothie, then bagel w/cream cheese/banana/small coffee right before the race.  For fuel I had 3 Cliff Shot energy gels and water at most of the aid stations (there was one at each mile).

-Negative Split information

CardioTrainer had 13.36 Miles/2:10:01 Time/9:43 Pace

Mile 01 09:30
Mile 02 09:49
Mile 03 09:35
Mile 04 10:36

Mile 07 06:15 (68% of 9:11)
1st Half 6.68 Miles/1:05:58/9:53 Pace

Mile 07 02:56 (32% of 9:11)
Mile 08 10:01
Mile 09 10:01
Mile 10 10:11

Runs from September 11-September 17, 2011, 26.58 Miles

September 13, 2011

5.09 Miles
52:19 Time
10:17 Pace

At first I didn't feel 100% but I think I was just rusty from taking an extra day off. Toward the end I was feeling better. Oh yeah, my 300th logged run.

September 14, 2011

8.2 Miles
1:30:50 Time
11:05 Pace

I left my water bottle at home by accident and I didn't eat much before I ran.  It was easier than I thought but it got tough at the end, and the last mile was 12:58.  Oddly the first 3 were all 9:59.

September 16, 2011

8.2 Miles
1:23:12 Time
10:09 Pace

Felt really good!  Nice and cool, I actually wore pants and a long sleeve shirt for the first time in ages.  It was about 45, probably not needed as I warmed up, but I didn't remember what I wore the last time it was 45.

September 17, 2011

5.09 Miles
56:57 Time
11:11 Pace

Another cool day, no need for water.  I tried to tire myself out a little bit.  I am doing a half Sunday and I don't want to push myself too hard, but then again, when you see people racing, you want to race with them.

Creamy Chickpea and Tomato Curry

On one level this was good, but its just a tad too sweat for me with coconut milk. It would probably be better if it was mixed with rice. If you are a big fan of coconut you will probably love it. The coconut milk also takes away some of the flavor that the garam marsala gives.

Hot and Spicy Chorizo Chili

A+ Simply amazing. I used Friedas Soyrizo (meatless soy chorizo) instead of chorizo, vegetable broth instead of chicken broth and no sour cream. The chipotle chiles mixed with tomatoes, which is the sauce, gives it a great kick. The Cumin and other spices are great as well.

2.66 Miles

Nice recovery run.  A little sluggish but overall not too bad.  A little rainy as well.

 September 8, 2011

5.09 Miles
53:45 Time
10:34 Pace

A little better than yesterday, but still not 100%.  It was rainy and then stopped.  I went out and it started up again, from miles 2.5-4.5 I got soaked, but luckily my jacket kept my phone dry.

September 9, 2011

8.2 Miles
1:26:03 Time
10:30 Pace

My left knee area was bothering me a little during the run.  Not painful, just a little irritating.  It didn't affect my pace much and it went away at times.  I am awful when it comes to stretching, but hopefully the free yoga I am doing Saturday helps a little http://salutationnation.com/

September 10, 2011

2.66 Miles
31:39 Time
11:54 Pace

My knee was still bothering me so I will probably take Monday off.  On the positive side of the things I finally reached my 30 mile week average.

Here is my progression.
Week 05 0029.85 miles / 05.97 miles a week average (I didn't record much early on so probably not accurate)
Week 07 0074.64 miles / 10.66 miles a week average
Week 12 0180.85 miles / 15.07 miles a week average
Week 23 0470.61 miles / 20.46 miles a week average
Week 33 0844.45 miles / 25.26 miles a week average
Week 69 2078.13 miles / 30.12 miles a week average

Gnocchi with Spicy Vodka Tomato Cream Sauce

I searched for a recipe that used silken or soft tofu as a sauce and found this.  This was a bit bland.  Some tomatoes which was nice but it didn't quite do it for me.  I didn't use vodka so maybe that made this just so so.

http://www.thekindlife.com/post/caseydogs-gnocchi-with-spicy-vodka-tomato-cream-sauce

Curried Chick Peas

Delicious!  Very good, some spices (cumin, coriander, turmeric, chili powder) for flavor and a great taste overall.  I even took this to a party and people seemed to like it.  Not too spicy for the average person.  I also made and brought some ambrosia salad (which I made before) but this seemed to be more popular.

The Labor Day 3/4 Marathon, Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx, NY

4:18:26 Time
19.65 Miles
13:09 Pace

1. 4:18:26/13:09 pace vs 4:34:36/13:59 pace at the Easter Marathon where I also tried 3 loops.

2. Loop 1-Felt great, almost felt like I ran it a little too fast.
Loop 2-Struggled a bit but I saw Louis G (see 4) and he helped pace me and a girl was yelling at people who started walking which also helped.
Loop 3-Started doing the run walk thing, and then more walking. I started listening to music which helped a little. It got a bit ugly but not too ugly. I also saw a women from Stamford, CT by a water fountain (she had a running shirt that mentioned Stamford Volvo) and we spoke about Irene while she filled her water bottle.

3. Overall, I feel beat but nothing painful. My legs were/are burning a little. Just I couldn't run the whole distance, but it's definitely a tough course for someone to run the entire distance. I should add it wasn't as hot as Easter which helped.

4. I saw my Daily Mile friend Louis G, who is the first person I met from this site (2 Daily Mile friends I met before they were Daily Mile friends.)  I saw him ahead of me loop 1 and caught up and chatted and then I picked up the pace and then he caught up and we chatted some more.

5. CardioTrainer has total climb as .4 miles, though I did two loops before and it showed .4 miles and my 18.4 mile road run in July had .4 miles, so that might not be accurate.

6. Labor Day vs Easter times
Loop 1 1:19:44/12:10 pace (time includes 6:52 break after the loop) vs 1:26:29/13:12 pace at Easter
Loop 2 1:28:38/13:32 pace (time includes 6:51 break after the loop) vs 1:27:20/13:20 pace at Easter
Loop 3 1:30:04/13:45 pace vs 1:40:47/15:23 pace at Easter

7. Fuel
Breakfast-Smoothie with protein/nutritional yeast/juices/fruits and cinnamon oat cereal.
Pre race-1 Cliff Shot energy gel and banana.
Race-35-40 oz powdered Gatorade, water, Gatorade perform (35-40 oz each loop), 4 Cliff Shot energy gels, 2 bananas and 3 Gatorade primes

August 29, 2011

5.09 Miles
52:14 Time

The storm wasn't too bad, but no running group tonight due to down power lines in Greenwich, CT.  Felt much better running than I had been last week.

August 30, 2011

8.2 Miles
1:32:46 Time
11:19 Pace

I liked the cool breeze and it felt good running.  My splits show I started fast and finished slower, but it felt like it was the opposite.

Post Irene picture 3

August 31, 2011

11.39 Miles
2:08:17 Time
11:16 Pace

Not a bad pace for the distance, and I walked for like 2 minutes and stopped at a convenience store for water.  I will cut back on miles and on Monday hopefully run 3 6.56 mile loops (3/4 marathon) at the Labor Day Marathon in the Bronx (a trail race).  Last time I tried 3 at the Easter Marathon I walked most of the 3rd, hopefully I can do better.

September 1, 2011

6.61 Miles
1:11:48 Time
10:52 Pace

For August, I ran 179.06 miles, which is my second highest monthly total.  It took me 32:45:15, or 10:59 pace.  I ran 26 days which is the highest number of days spent running in a month.

September 2, 2011

5.09 Miles
52:30 Time
10:19 Pace

First time in awhile I didn't take my water battle.  Don't want to get too dependent on always having water with me.  Nice and cool today so I didn't really need it.
